Actor Hansika Motwani is reportedly set to face a trial after the Bombay High Court firmly dismissed her plea to quash a cruelty complaint filed by her former sister-in-law, Nancy James. Following the court's rejection, the high-profile case has now moved into a critical trial stage, which places both Motwani and her mother, Jyotika Motwani, under serious legal scrutiny.

According to reports, Nancy James was earlier married to Hansika’s brother, Prashant Motwani. Nancy has levelled grave accusations against Hansika and her mother, alleging that the two subjected her to cruelty and harassment when she was still married

According to documents recovered by Hindustan Times, an FIR has been lodged by Nancy under multiple sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita, Section 498A (dowry-related cruelty), including Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and Section 352 (criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace).

These charges have paved the way for a full-fledged trial against Haniska and her mother. James reportedly married Prashant Motwani in March 2021. In her complaint, she claimed that she endured persistent domestic violence during her marriage. She also alleged that her in-laws routinely demanded money and expensive gifts from her, leaving her feeling deeply humiliated.

Her lawsuit, by Nancy, also claims that she was compelled to sell her flat under pressure from the Motwanis. She has also claimed that the alleged continued abuse eventually affected her health and led to her being diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy. A source reportedly said, “Nancy and Prashant Motwani, Hansika’s brother, had a lavish wedding ceremony in March 2021. However, their marriage was strained from the start. A year later, the two started living separately."

 Hansika Motwani to face trial

In February 2025, Hansika Motwani and her mother had secured anticipatory bail from the Mumbai Sessions Court, which offered them temporary protection from arrest. However, in the following months, the actress filed a petition in court requesting the dismissal of the FIR. Now, the Bombay High Court has rejected Hansika's plea. This means that Motwani and her mother will now face trial in the case.

Reports also claim that Hansika is going through turmoil in her personal life, too, particularly marital challenges with her businessman husband, Sohael Khaturiya.
