Sunjay Kapur, the businessman who died during a polo match in London last month, prompting a struggle over the 30,000 crore Sona Group, died of "natural causes," according to the Surrey Coroner's report provided by his wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, on Sunday.
Kapur, the chairman of Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd (Sona Comstar), died of a heart attack on June 12, prompting multiple senior-level changes at the company.
Here's what the investigation revealed
The investigation "has revealed he (i.e., Sunjay Kapur) died of natural causes" and diagnosed left ventricular hypertrophy and ischemic heart disease as the causes.
Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) develops when the muscular wall of the heart's left ventricle thickens abnormally, making it more difficult for the heart to pump blood efficiently. This occurs when the heart needs to work harder than usual, usually owing to high blood pressure.
The latter, also known as ischemic heart disease or coronary artery disease, occurs when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen and blood, which is typically caused by narrowed arteries. The most prevalent cause of this narrowing is atherosclerosis, which is the accumulation of fatty deposits, cholesterol, and other substances on the artery walls.
Sunjay Kapur's demise has sparked international interest in the ongoing battle among the powerful Sona Comstar family.
Sunjay's mother Rani Kapur's claims
His mother, Rani Kapur, the previous chairperson of the company, has formally sought UK authorities, asking for a complete investigation into what she calls the "mysterious circumstances" surrounding his death in London.
According to ANI, an official criminal complaint has been filed in the UK disputing the circumstances surrounding Sunjay Kapur's unexpected death. Rani Kapur filed the complaint, urging British law enforcement to act quickly.
Rani Kapur broke her silence with an emotional video interview with ANI, her first public appearance since Sunjay's death, expressing sadness and lingering doubts. "I still don't know what happened to my son," she explained, her voice cracking. "I am old now. I need closure before I leave."
She said, "I remember the early days of Sona — built with care, sacrifice, and love," emphasizing her strong bond with the company she co-founded with her late husband. Her words also acted as a veiled counter to the company's claims that she has not had any involvement in its affairs since 2019.
Despite the continuing succession fight, the business recently named Sunjay's wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, as a non-executive director, beginning July 23, 2025. Just a day later, in a letter to the firm, Rani Kapur claimed that some people took advantage of the family's grief to "wrest control and usurp the family legacy".
She also claimed she was coerced into signing agreements soon after her son's death and encouraged the board to cancel the annual general meeting, as well as advise against any new appointments.
