July 12th, the day of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant's wedding, is here, and it's going to be grander than we could have imagined. Since June, the couple has been making headlines for their pre-wedding celebrations, from the 3-day long Jamnagar trip to the special puja at Antilia—everything has been like a dream celebration. Now, as the D-day is here, let's look at the actual rituals of a traditional Gujarati wedding.

Ganesh sthapana

A Gujarati shaadi starts with the Ganesh sthapana, where both families separately worship Lord Ganesh. The idea behind this is to have a hurdle-free ceremony and to seek divine blessings.

Mandap pujan

Then the families perform mandap pujan, also called mandap muharat, where a puja of the auspicious mandap, where the pheras are going to happen, is performed.

Grah shanti

Following this, a grah shanti puja is conducted, which was also done by Anant and Radhika. A Grah Shanti Puja is an absolute must to ensure a happy and peaceful marital life for the couple.

Mehendi ceremony

Two days before the wedding, the mehendi ceremony takes place at the bride's house. During this event, all the women in the family, along with the bride's sisters, cousins, and friends, gather to apply heena to their palms.

Haldi & Mameru

Then comes the Haldi ceremony, followed by mameru. Mameru is the ritual where everyone comes to see what the maternal uncle of the bride has gifted her.

The wedding

After all of this, it's time for the actual wedding ceremony to begin. Just before that, a ritual called kanku thapa is performed where the bride puts her handprints on the wall. After this, the main wedding includes the jaimala ceremony where the couple exchanges garlands followed by kanya daan and mangal Pheras. Interestingly, in a Gujarati wedding, there are never 7 pheras; instead, there are always 4 pheras. Post this, the vidai happens, where finally the bride's family hands over their little princess to the groom.

Pag phera

Post-wedding, the ritual of pag phera is performed, where the bride's brother comes to take her home, and later the husband goes to bring her back to her new house.
