Updated On: 12 January, 2010 08:03 AM IST | | Hitlist Team
The Hitlist Team asks the citizens of the film industry about their student life and advice for the young guns; and a message for parents to not drive their wards up the wall. Read on...
Book-smart. Important?Academic institutions are of prime importance. They discipline and train you for life ahead. To me, education is like meditation -- it calms my senses. My education has made me combat and deal with life at every hour. It's trained me to deliver on time, meet deadlines and manage pressure. The pressure of giving an exam is bigger than a film release. Don't take a book's content too seriously but they do serve a larger purpose.
Performance pressure?
My parents never forced me to top my class. They said if I was happy, they were happy. The biggest competitor is with your own abilities and not others.
Dealing with stress
I didn't have to deal much with that as no-one ever pressured me. I was weak in Math, so when I took up commerce, I took up studying Maths as a challenge that I am not dumb -- I just have a block. And I overcame that.
Any advice?
I think Wake Up Sid says quite a bit. Do your bit to educate your child but listen to your child too. Let them follow their dreams and hearts, let your child breathe and follow his vision. If you don't, you haven't lived at all. If they are passionate about a profession, help them bring it out or they will suffer later in marriage or relationships. Let them choose their lives. Don't push them.
Educational Qualifications
I am a B Com graduate.
Vikram Bhatt
Book-smart. Important?
I don't think so. I believe in the Chinese proverb: Walking a 100 steps is more knowledgeable that reading a 100 pages. But I have done a lot of reading -- on my own.
Performance pressure?
Not at all. My parents let me do what I wanted.
Dealing with stress
By keeping myself engaged in activity. In fact, I had some very good teachers who were instrumental in introducing me to non-academic pursuits like dramatics which ultimately led me to filmmaking.
Any advice?
My daughter Krishna is a teenager. As a parent, I have told her to follow her dreams. I am always there to pick her up when she stumbles or falls.
Educational Qualifications
I did studied till HSC in NM College. I began working from the age of 14.
Vipul Shah
Book-smart. Important?
We need to understand what we read. The educational system needs to work towards that. It is important to enjoy what you are reading. Picking up knowledge is important but not in the way it is done in our system. For example, in history, we were expected to remember Shivaji's birthdate but never the work he did. The focus has to be changed.
Performance pressure?
My parents never pressured me. My playing hours were fixed -- after school hours till dark. Even in Class 10, my parents never told me to secure a certain percentage. I watched TV and was a naughty kid. My teachers never thought I would amount to much but there was no pressure from them. Everything was okay as long as I got a first class.
Dealing with stress
I never took stress. We need to create an environment where we don't look down upon those who do not score well. We need to separate educational qualifications from what it takes to be a good human being. Character judgement should not be made on the basis of ranks or percentages.
Any advice?
To parents: know how much pressure a child can take. Any more than that and you will create problems in his/her personality. Under-stand that competition is good but to an extent (as long as it is a healthy one).
Educational Qualifications
B Com from N M College.
Sajid Khan
Book-smart. Important?
Grades are important. So is having a practical know-how of things.
Performance pressure?
Of course I went through that. Which student doesn't feel the pressure of getting good grades?
Dealing with stress
My escape route was cinema. I attended that school regularly.
Any advice?
Suicide can never be the answer. Anyone who ends their life also ends the life of an entire family. No matter what the problem is, one can only fight it if one is alive.
Educational Qualifications
I have done my B A.u00a0
Farah Khan
Book-smart. Important?
It's always good to read books to expand your horizons but not having any practical knowledge is useless. When you go out in the real world, life teaches you more than books do.
Performance pressure?
I always used to stand first in class. My mom used to make sure I coped with the pressure when I became very competitive. I was a smart child and I would cry if I came second in class.
Dealing with stress
My mom was home all the time, and she would make sure I learned my lessons, but I was not a nerd. I was given time out to for films, playtime and parties.
Any advice?
I don't know if what I learnt in school is helping me today. Education develops your personality but it is important for students to pursue the field where their interest lies. Just getting good grades in not enough. It expands your horizons. I would never pressure my kids. I think music and painting are just as important as math and science.
Educational Qualifications
Graduate.
Ameesha Patel
Book-smart. Important?Being book-smart gives you knowledge but you have to be street-smart. Which I am not, although I think I am educated and intelligent.
Performance pressure?
Yes, mom wanted me to be an achiever and I thank her for that. I used to shiver if I came second in class. But that has stood me in good stead. Our education teaches us to mug. I enjoyed my stint in USA for four years in college, where we are encouraged to ask questions.
Dealing with stress
I would go for a walk by the sea side at Marine Drive.
Any advice?
I would tell parents not to over-pressure their children. Don't force them into any vocation. My parents came from business and politics but they supported me when I became an actress. I found my bearing because of them. It's very important to letu00a0 your child find what he/she is good at.u00a0
Educational Qualifications
I am a gold medallist in Economics from the Tufts University in Boston.
Anil Kapoor
Book-smart. Important?
It is. I was never too much into studies but I regret that. I wish I had read more. I belong to the group whou00a0 made their mark without being academically brilliant but I wish I had more knowledge. There has to be a balance. Escapism -- like it has been shown in 3 Idiots -- is also not correct.
Performance pressure?
No. My parents always let me do my own thing. I loved playing games especially cricket and never thought about studies. The kind of pressure we see on students today is shocking!
Dealing with stress
I never had any! I used to study at the last moment -- from 4 am in the morning -- for three hours. I never failed in life. My approach was wrong but my preparation was better.
Any advice?
I'd recommend a balance -- go with your dreams but achieve academic education. Rishi Valley School in Bangalore lets you be -- like the American system of education. There are restrictions but discipline is not forced. Unnecessary pressure will have children cracking under pressure more. All these student suicides have to be taken seriously and something done by the parents, faculty and education system. We have to educate the children and make them stable.
Educational Qualifications
I studied for two years in Arts at St Xavier's college but quit as dad got ill and I started working.
Sunil Shetty
Book smart. Important?I strongly believe parents need to defend their children and believe in them and do whatever is the best for their children at every stage and be involved and not terrorise them. Education is the most important thng in life but being first isn't the most important. Following your dreams is very important but so is what you are happy doing.
Performance pressure?
Never. During exams I would go down and play, I slept well with a clear mind. I'm so much more better than I was yesterday because I did my hotel management course and pursued my dreams. I got an offer to do my best, one life to live. Befriend your kids and treats them as adults.
Dealing with stress
Speak to your family. Parents, you should be able to talk to and to teach your kids to express themselves then you'll understand what they're going through. If we don't give them the confidence to stand for what's right and wrong, who will.
Any advice?
Let them pursue their dreams. Don't let education be the be-all and end-all. We need people for every job. The world wouldn't work if only engineers, doctorsand IT grads excel. In the end, it's all about being happy.
Educational Qualifications
B Com from hr College. Hotel Management from Sophia's.
Tusshar Kapoor
Book-smart. Important?
The discipline that one puts into getting ready for exams, makes you stronger. The grades might not make a difference as much as the preparation does.
Performance pressure?
My parents were very supportive and didn't pressure me. I'd always get a rank in the top 6. It was only after I joined business school that I started getting worried about my grades.u00a0
Dealing with stress
The best way to deal with pressure is to meet your fears and face them head on.u00a0
Any advice?
Bad grades are not the end of the world. Good grades are important but they definitely don't define your life.u00a0u00a0
Educational Qualifications
I have done my HSC from NM College and then did my BBA from Michigan.
