Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh recently approached the Karnataka High Court seeking the dismissal of a criminal case registered against him over his remarks and imitation of the daiva portrayal in the film Kantara. The case was filed earlier in January following objections to his comments and actions, which many alleged were inappropriate.

In his petition, presented before a bench led by Justice M. Nagaprasanna, Ranveer Singh argued that his statements were intended as a genuine appreciation of Rishab Shetty’s performance and characterisation in the film Kantara. The actor's legal team contended that his appreciation had been wrongly interpreted and given a criminal angle.
The petition also noted that the police have already issued two notices to the actor in connection with the matter, adding that it is causing unnecessary pressure.
During the hearing on Monday, the court questioned the request made by the actor's counsel for an urgent and immediate listing of the case. Justice Nagaprasanna questioned whether the matter should be taken up urgently just because the petitioner is a Bollywood star. The judge further remarked whether similar urgency would be expected if the petitioner were a Hollywood actor.
Consequently, the court declined the plea for a same-day hearing and stated it would follow its regular procedure. The matter has now been scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday.
About Ranveer Singh's Daiva controversy
During one of the ceremonies of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025, Ranveer tried to recreate the sequence from the film where Rishab is possessed by the Chamundi daiva. Showing his appreciation for the movie, Ranveer, during the event, said, "I watched Kantara Chapter 1 in theatres, and Rishab, it was an outstanding performance, especially when the female ghost (Chamundi daiva) enters your body that shot was amazing." Following his statement, he went on to imitate the scene in which Chamundi daiva possesses Rishabh.
Rishab Shetty, who was also present in the audience, tried to stop Ranveer by raising a finger and signalling him to stop. The Kantara actor tried to remind Ranveer that Daiva portrayals are sacred and not meant to be reenacted in a casual manner.
Post the event, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) even lodged an official complaint against Ranveer for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The Dhurandhar actor then apologised for his act and statemnets ia a social media post.
Later, on January 29, the Karnataka Police lodged an FIR against Singh for allegedly insulting the gods and sacrosanct Daiva traditions. The FIR was filed following the complaint in this regard by law practitioner Prashanth Methal. COnsequently, Ranveer Singh was booked under Sections 196 (threat to public order and social cohesion), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage the religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or beliefs) and 302 (deliberate, intentional wounding of religious feelings. It applies to anyone who speaks words, makes sounds, gestures, or places objects with the intent to offend) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Act.
