Kunal Kapoor sparked backlash after calling vegetarians “racist” on Pooja Bhatt’s podcast, saying non-vegetarians feel excluded in vegetarian homes. Social media users slammed his remarks as entitled and ignorant, while some defended him as joking or misquoted
Kunal Kapoor
After making controversial remarks regarding vegetarianism, actor and filmmaker Kunal Kapoor—son of the late Shashi Kapoor and uncle to Ranbir Kapoor—found himself at the center of a social media maelstrom. Many social media users have called his comments, which he made during a discussion on Pooja Bhatt's podcast, offensive and entitled.
"I think vegetarians are racist," Kunal said simply during the conversation. "So, I'm a racist?" Pooja Bhatt asked, chuckling. He reiterated that, as a non-vegetarian, he feels left out. He claims that while he provides both vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine to his visitors at home, he is not treated equally when he visits vegetarian homes, which he considers to be unjust.
Kunal Kapoor's comment triggers backlash
Reddit commenters attacked Kunal for what they saw as entitlement and a contemptuous attitude toward other people's dietary views shortly after stories from the podcast became public. “Ok Karen, calm down.. the world doesn't revolve around your needs. If you go to someone's home or someone's country, it's important to assimilate instead of claiming to be almighty and wronged all the time. Oh wait, it's a Kapoor. I won't waste my breath.” Another one commented, “Racism is not the same as discriminatory or exclusionary. These people need to get a dictionary because they think they sound intelligent when they are actually stupid.”
With one comment saying, "They are dumb, the majority of them can't even pass 12th standard with all their resources, let alone go to university/college," the criticism grew more intense. To put it mildly, Kapoors aren't particularly intelligent. "Not dumb," said another. privileged and entitled.
Some were considerably more severe. "The entire family is so screwed up in the head!" was one comment. "Bruhhhh, what's the point of blabbering all this nonsense?" Not all responses, though, were unfavorable. Some users defended Kunal, arguing that his remarks were misinterpreted.
One of them wrote in support, “It might be said in a humorous tone, and the paper made it clickbait. The fact remains- non-veg people give exclusive options to the veg people during invitations. But we, non-veg people, don't get the same options in gatherings hosted by vegetarian families. This is a fact and veg. People can give all their reasons, and we understand that. But yeah - there are no options exclusively for non-veg people in such gatherings.” Another simply said, “He's clearly joking.”
Ranbir Kapoor's recent controversy
The controversy also surfaced a few days after Ranbir Kapoor's consumption of what seemed to be non-vegetarian food on Netflix's Dining With The Kapoors drew criticism. Viewers questioned whether Ranbir, as he had previously stated, had actually given up non-vegetarian food in order to play Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming Ramayana. The incident fueled the ongoing discussion about the Kapoor family's dietary choices, even though it is still unclear if the items displayed were vegetarian or not.
