A-list actresses seem to be leading an unabashed rebellion against the tyranny of high heels at Cannes, a year after the ludicrous flat shoe ban at the prestigious film festival.

Why is this choice of footwear important, one might ask. It is because women are taking a stand against being pigeonholed and saying, in not so many words, that a woman in flats is just as feminine as a woman in heels, and the rules and guidelines should mindfully be made for both genders. Walking all over conventional rules this year, a bunch of powerful women are making a statement without being outrageously vocal about their sentiments.

Julia Roberts laughed in the very face of the film festival when she took off her shoes mid-way at a screening of her latest release, Money Monster, as she sashayed down the red carpet in a fairly sombre black gown and completely barefoot, giving two hoots to the rule. French magazine L&rsquo;Express applauded Roberts&rsquo; barefoot appearance as a &lsquo;veritable act of militant feminism&rsquo;.

Sarandon broke a couple of &lsquo;rules&rsquo; herself looking as suave as ever. Breaking the traditional &lsquo;elegant gown and high heels&rsquo; rule, the powerhouse of acting stepped out in a tux, sunglasses and flats. Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher also kept it simple and casual when she walked the red carpet in comfortable looking flats at the premiere of Mademoiselle, with her pet pup in tow!

Kristen Stewart, on the other hand, was a lot more vocal when she addressed the press during a roundtable interview of her film, Caf&eacute; Society, directed by Woody Allen. In a though-provoking statement, she said, &ldquo;Things have to change immediately. It has become really obvious that if a man and I were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, &lsquo;Excuse me, young lady, you&rsquo;re not wearing heels. You cannot come in.&rsquo; Then I&rsquo;m going to say, &lsquo;neither is my friend. Does he have to wear heels?&rsquo; It can work both ways. It&rsquo;s just like you simply cannot ask me to do something that you are not asking him.&rdquo;
Emily Blunt had also openly condemned the festival last year at a press conference. &ldquo;Everyone should wear flats, to be honest. We shouldn&rsquo;t wear high heels. That&rsquo;s very disappointing, just when you kind of think there are these new waves of equality,&rdquo; she had said.
