This new crime drama Curfew, which takes place in a futuristic UK, is set in a world where men are tagged and have to abide by a nightly electronic curfew. It’s basically speculative fiction and aims to transport us deeper into this imagined world.
Seasoned detective Pamela Green(Sarah Parrish), is investigating a murder that is baffling because it happened despite a heavily policed setup. Curfew’s dystopian alternate universe has rules that place major limitations on male freedom. Men live under nightly electronic surveillance and risk prison for any infraction during curfew. Men’s Liberation Now group is protesting the restrictions and calling it an abuse of civil rights. Women on the other hand are able to wander streets at night without fear. Pam is convinced only a man could be responsible for such a brutal crime. But with all males confined after 7pm, how is this possible?
Curfew is also a gripping police procedural that keeps you guessing till the very end. Curfew’s depth of character generates insights that could heal societal wounds. Each of the characters here are fleshed out beautifully to fit into this re-imagined world. The ongoing investigation runs through a cast of suspects, each with their own unique motives. The writing is clever enough to throw new clues in the mix, to keep you guessing.
The series is interesting in the manner in which it tackles this imaginary concept. It broaches complex conversations with a vivid imagination. It’s a beautifully realized make-believe world that navigates through issues as multifaceted as the society it portrays. The series raises questions as to the need for gender specific social controls and opens the room for discussions about safety, rights, and relationships between genders.
Detective Pamela Green’s unbending pursuit of the case is driven by the loss of her own daughter to violence before curfew was established. Sarah Parish does a wonderful job imbuing Pam with grief and grit - a prime reason for viewers to remain invested in her quest for answers and justice. Curfew manages to be thought-provoking and gripping.
