Ravi Shankar to Zakir Hussain, Indian who have won Grammys so far

Grammys 2024: Since 1968, we have been winning big at the Grammys. As we add another feather to our hats, here’s a list of Indian artists who have had Grammys to their names

India woke up to a happy Monday morning as desi musicians won big at the Grammys 2024. Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain's 'Shakti' band won the Best Global Music Album award for 'This Moment' at the Grammys 2024. It was the first-ever Grammy award for most Indian musicians, and Zakir Hussain created history with three wins in a night.


This was not the first time when our artists have made India proud on the global stage. Since 1968, we have been winning big at the Grammys. As we add another feather to our hats, here’s a list of Indian artists who have had Grammys to their names:


1. In the year 1968, Ravi Shankar won under the category of Best Chamber Music Performance for West Meets East.
2. In 1973, Ravi Shankar bagged another Grammy under the category of Album of the Year for The Concert for Bangladesh.
3. In the year 1981, Zubin Mehta took home two Grammy Awards in the categories Best Classical Performance - Instrumental Soloist Or Soloists (With Orchestra) and Best Engineered Recording, Classical.
4. In 1982, Zubin Mehta got an award for Verdi: Arias (Leontyne Price Sings Verdi) under the category of Best Classical Vocal Soloist Performance.
5. In 1990, Zubin Mehta got two awards under the categories Best Classical Performance, Instrumental Soloist (With Orchestra) and Best Classical Vocal Performance.
6. In 1991, T. H. Vinayakram and Zakir Hussain were awarded under the category Best World Music Album for Planet Drum.
7. In 1992, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt got a Grammy in the category Best World Music Album.
8. In 2002, Ravi Shankar got yet another Grammy Award in the category of Best World Music Album for Full Circle: Carnegie Hall 2000.
9. In 2008, A. R. Rahman, H. Sridhar, and P. A. Deepak won big for Slumdog Millionaire under the category Best Compilation Soundtrack Album.
10. In 2008, A. R. Rahman, Gulzar, and Tanvi Shah were honoured with an award for Slumdog Millionaire under the category Best Song Written for Visual Media.
11. In 2008, Zakir Hussain also got an award in the category Best Contemporary World Music Album for Global Drum Project.
12. In 2013 and 2014, Ravi Shankar won one award each year for The Living Room Sessions Pt. 1 and The Living Room Sessions Pt. 2 in the category of Best World Music Album.
13. In 2015, Ricky Kej through Winds of Samsara got an award in the category of Best New Age Album. 
14. In 2015, the Best Children's Album category award went to Neela Vaswani for I AM MALALA.
15. In 2022, P. A. Deepak, Ricky Kej, and Stewart Copeland won in the category of Best New Age Album for Divine Tides.
16. In 2022 Falu aka Falguni Shah also received an award under the category Best Children's Music Album for  ‘A Colourful World’


For the unversed, the Grammy Awards are awards presented by the Recording Academy of the United States to recognize "outstanding" achievements in the music industry.
