Director: Benjamin Caron
Rating: 2.5/5
Runtime: 108 m

Night Always Comes spends a night with Lynette (Vanessa Kirby), who’s just about struggling to keep her life together.

She is fighting to retain her childhood home, in which she resides with her Downs Syndrome brother, Kenny (Zack Gottsagen ) and their mother, Doreen (Jennifer Jason Leigh).

Doreen is an alcoholic, doesn’t care who gets hurt, and she is of no help. Lynette has to get $25, 000/- together and reach the loan office by 9 am in the morning. So Lynette sets out on a dangerous odyssey, confronting her own dark past over the course of one propulsive night.

Doreen is set to meet Lynette and sign papers and make the financing official, but Doreen buys a car instead. There’s a hint of some mental health issue there, but it never gets said aloud. Sarah Conradt’s screenplay isn’t all that accomplished.

The story delves into themes of loss, survival, and the struggle for hope amid despair. Kirby embodies a character burdened by past traumas while fighting to forge a new path forward.

Lynette tries to use her outstanding connections to get the rest of the money. There’s a ticking clock in the background, so you know how imperative it becomes for Lynette to achieve her objective within the said time. We get to know that despite working a day job at a bread factory and a night shift at a bar, Lynette has a still-ongoing gig as a kind of escort. She approaches Scott (Randall Park), a regular customer. But he fails to cough up enough to help, so Lynette is on to her next stop. Lynette’s visit with Gloria (Julia Fox), an old friend and fellow call girl who’s hit the big time by being the favourite mistress of a senator, doesn’t provide any results either.

Night Always Comes aims to be a gripping exploration of human resilience and emotional depth, but it rarely achieves those heights.

The narrative tries to weave in themes of loss and hope. It manages to capture fleeting memories and lingering regrets that resonate. The dialogues sometimes feel contrived, though.

The background score, laden with haunting melodies, manages to provide some tangible emotive strength to the wishy-washy narrative. "Night Always Comes" though flawed, stirs up some emotion in its exploration of the human experience. The exploration of relationships also adds some complexity to the telling. The narrative, though ticking away to the tune of a time bomb, is rather slow on the uptake.

Kirby is captivating in the complex character and evokes empathy towards her plight. The writing and plotting don’t make her interesting enough, though. The film's dark cinematography does well to enhance the tense atmosphere.

Night Always Comes manages to be poignant and heartfelt - if not meaningful. It is basically Kirby's performance that renders it so.
