Spider-Man Brand New Day movie review: Kept it sentimental, Spidey!

Director Destin Daniel CrettonActors Tom Holland ZendayaRating 3 starsConsider that there have been half a dozen SpiderMan movies including live action and animation in less than a decade Forget Brand New Day this is hardly even a brandnew film then What do you even introduce to keep the franchise fresh stillTherersquos an obvious advantage that Spidey holds mdash compared to the largely hypermasculine Marvel pantheon And thatrsquos to do with his alterego Peter Parker alone whorsquos intrinsically so childlike Peter Panish mdash therersquos no way you arenrsquot drawn to him first His adorable innocence is the audiencebait if not a superpower of its ownAlthough therersquos a scene in Brand New Day where Spidey drops his suit and the actor Tom Holland with his mask still on is down to his boxers in the swimming pool He appears quite shockingly the gym jock with the bulkedup body of a superslim hulk himselfMy favourite scene for a partially humanised Spidey might well be in SpiderMan 2 2004 where Tobey Maguire halts a New York subway train with his hands while his suit starts to tear off and he faintscollapses eventuallySo this isnrsquot the first time wersquore seeing this superhero so vulnerable onscreen under extreme pressure But itrsquos certainly the furthest we may have gone so far mdash what with his internal powers constantly under question in an onoff state over issues to do with DNA mutation and the like wherein therersquos barely any distinction between Peter and Spidey homing in on being human altogetherThat pool scene mentioned above relates to Spidey chatting with masterspy Black Widow Florence Pugh Early on while labelling his bodysuit ldquoleotardrdquo she says the problem he has to solve is ldquosmall potatordquo as against the ldquobig potatordquo crises the rest of the Avengers usually deal withThe said smallpotato being existential threats at a more street level I guess It might seem as if shersquos mocking Spidey It gets me more interested in the movie per seAnd thatrsquos because quite frankly Irsquove somewhat had it with the Avengers collective hitting the giant league where you can hardly count the number of crossover characters and every scene is a bloody blowupReally therersquos only one world mdash how many times over can you destroy it anyway A certain fatigue sets in with the senselessness of repeatedly saving multiple planets for a destructive blastfest perhaps Therersquos even a funny critique of Thanos in this picWhich is probably why the moments that truly got me into Spideyrsquos web are the saner stuff away from the white noise when Peterrsquos being supremely sentimental with his ex Zendaya jamming with his bestie Jacob Batalon when not suffering from selfdoubt or being commiserated for the doomed loneliness that inevitably follows those with special powersThis is to take away nothing from the setpieces Only that this is a film in theatres right off the back of Christopher Nolanrsquos The Odyssey also starring Tom Holland amp Zendaya that took spectacle for a sensory experience to another heightened realistic levelUnrelatedly as Kader Khan once put it in the film Sharaabi 1984 ldquoMoochein ho toh Nathulal jaisi warna na ho mount the Everest or donrsquotrdquo The 3D feels piddly in comparison What doesnrsquot is Hollandrsquos playful energy as SpideyPeter Hersquos the chief crime fighter for Manhattan brought in by law enforcers when things get too much for human cop to handle His fan club pans across New York City His identity remains protected stillFor the most part you canrsquot see the supervillain at all When you do she isnrsquot a creepy crawly enormous piece of crap eitherShe Sadie Sink can mindcontrol them and others though mdash blessed with a supertalent for telepathy Ultimately you might even feel empathy for herThe site under recurrent attack is a secret station called Damage Control The state runs it The superhero is very much part of the establishment Hersquos on call of dutyHerersquos my thought about people in general losing trust in their governments across the world given democracies developing despotic tendencies What if the elected state itself was an enemyIrsquom not saying thatrsquos what happens in Brand New Day Itrsquos a bit more complicated than that And even if it did hardly gonna mention that rightOne ought to be deeply sensitive about spoilers for a film that everyone I know is gonna watch it anyway mdash whether or not theyrsquoll read this review So be it Go catch it for yourself and find out then
