Recently, the political party AIADMK organised a protest in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, condemning the DMK government for failing to prevent the cases of sexual assault in the state of Tamil Nadu. During the protest, while addressing the crowd, the party's leader, CV Shanmugam, took actress Nayanthara's name in one of the statements in poor taste. The remark has clearly not gone down well with the netizens, who have slammed the AIADMK chief.

During his speech, the leader spoke about former President APJ Abdul Kalam’s famous call to “dream” before he went on to make a crude analogy, dragging Nayanthara's name in it.
While talking about the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, Shanmugam stated, “Abdul Kalam asked us to dream. He (Stalin) even said to share our dreams. If I say I want Nayanthara, will he (Stalin) fulfil my dream? If someone asks him (Stalin) to arrange their marriage with Nayanthara, will he fulfil that dream?”
Meanwhile, other party leaders present around him seemingly endorsed the remarks by responding with approving laughter.
Netizens react
Clips of the same soon went viral on the internet and netizens began slamming Shanmugam. A netizen wrote, "Men in Tamil Nadu politics are so disgusting. Nayanthara is married with kids and they still dragging her name like this. Low lifes (sic)." Another X user urged the actress to speak out, saying, "NayantharaU please speak out. Post a strong condemnation (sic)."
One more netizen pointed out, "It seems like the former minister has no dreams for the people! Is being an actress become so despicable to you, Mr. CV Shanmugam? (sic)."
While Shanmugam's comment has clearly upset the fans of Nayanthara, the actress is yet to release any statement or react to the whole incident. Meanwhile, many even urged the Tamil Nadu Police to register a case against the MP and called for disciplinary action by AIADMK.
Notably, this is not the first time Shanmugam has attracted controversy over remarks involving women. In 2025, the minister triggered outrage after saying that the Chief Minister might even "announce a free wife" as part of his poll promises. The statement was widely condemned by people who called it regressive.
