Actor-turned-politician Vijay was questioned by the Central Investigation Bureau (CBI) for about six hours on Monday. The TVK chief was grilled about the crowd management and delays that contributed to the Karur stampede last year, which claimed 41 lives during his political rally.

CBI Grills Vijay

As per the latest update by PTI, Vijay was questioned for nearly 6 hours by the CBI. The officials mentioned that he could be called again for questioning since some queries need further clarification.

On Monday, Vijay was seen reaching the CBI headquarters in Delhi at 11.29 AM. After the completion of the necessary formalities, the actor was taken to a team in the anti-corruption unit, which is currently investigating the case. He left the premises at around 6.15 PM.

Several fans had gathered around the premises of the headquarters to express their support for Vijay. He reportedly arrived in Delhi on a chartered flight from Chennai with some of his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) colleagues. Notably, the CBI had earlier issued a notice to Vijay under Section 179 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), asking him to present himself for examination.

According to an India Today report, Vijay informed investigators that neither his party nor its functionaries were responsible for the tragic stampede. He also said he left the venue after sensing that his presence may worsen the existing chaos at the venue. Vijay was asked to meet with CBI investigators again on Tuesday, January 13. However, he requested to be exempted from questioning tomorrow due to Pongal, which was accepted by the CBI. He will now be called on a later date, according to reports.

About the Karur stampede incident

The tragic stampede took place on September 27 last year, during a political rally organised by TVK in Karur district, Tamil Nadu. The event, which was addressed by Vijay, drew a massive crowd at the specified venue and turned chaotic. The overcrowding led to a huge stampede and resulted in the death of 41 people and injuries to several other people.

The Supreme Court earlier ordered the CBI to investigate the case on October 26, 2025. It had noted that statements by senior Tamil Nadu police officers protecting their subordinates after the unfortunate incident had eroded public trust. It also highlighted the need for an “impartial, independent and unbiased” inquiry to restore the faith of the public in the criminal justice system.
