The CFBC-led delay in the release of Vijay's Jana Nayagan has led to India's largest ticket refund. The film, scheduled to release on January 9, has recorded considerable sales through advance bookings before the hindrance in its release. The makers will issue refunds of Rs 1 crore
Vijay in Jana Nayagan
The fate of Vijay's final film, Jana Nayagan, remains uncertain, as the film still awaits clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The delay in certification has led to the makers hastily postponing its release just two days before its scheduled release date. However, by then, advance bookings had already opened, and thousands of tickets had already been sold worldwide. Following the delay and uncertainty, the makers and ticketing platforms have started a refund process, which is believed to be India's largest ticket refund.
Jana Nayagan to issue India's largest ticket refund
Jana Nayagan was all set to hit the screens on January 9, just in time for the Pongal weekend. However, on the evening of January 7, the makers announced that the film was being postponed indefinitely. The reason for the delay was a non-issue of a certificate from the CBFC. The film’s makers and Vijay moved the Madras High Court over the non-issuance.
According to industry trackers, ticketing platform BookMyShow started the monumental task of refunding over 450,000 tickets after the postponement announcement. This has been dubbed the largest refund in Indian cinema history. Trade experts estimate that tickets worth Rs 1 crore have been refunded to the viewers since the postponement was announced in India alone. Globally, the number could be even higher.
Madras HC orders CBFC to certify Jana Nayagan
On Friday, January 9, the Madras High Court instructed the CBFC to issue the film a U/A 16+ certificate and subsequently clear it for release. However, the certification still has not been completed. According to reports, the CBFC intends to appeal the High Court judgment.
Jana Nayagan is a highly anticipated film since it is meant to be Vijay’s last as he prepares to step into politics. The actor-turned-politician is set to contest this year’s Tamil Nadu Assembly elections with his party, TVK. His party members and supporters have called the delay in his film’s release a political ploy to ‘stall his fame’.
Jana Nayagan is directed by H Vinoth and also stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju. The makers are expected to announce a new release date once they get clearance from the CBFC.
