Kannada filmmaker S Narayan has found himself in legal trouble after his family was booked by police in a dowry harassment case. It all began after their son Pavan’s wife, Pavithra, filed a police complaint against her in-laws alleging financial exploitation. She even claimed she was forced to leave her home with her minor son.
Kannada filmmaker S Narayan booked for dowry harassment
Pavithra and Pavan got married in 2021. As per her complaint, she took care of household expenses and even gave Pavan a loan as he was unemployed. Her mother also supported him financially when he wanted to open an acting institute.
“Since Pavan hasn’t completed his degree, he has no job. So, I started working to look after the family. Some time ago, he took Rs 1 lakh from me and Rs 75,000 from my mother to buy a car. Meanwhile, my husband’s family started Kala Samrat Film Academy, and I pledged my mother’s gold to help them financially. Later, the academy shut down. Again, they asked me for money, and I took a professional loan of Rs 10 lakh. They repaid only part of the money in monthly instalments and then stopped,” Pavithra stated in her police complaint.
As per the complaint, Pavithra’s family also gave a ring worth Rs 1 lakh and bore the wedding expenses. Despite this, Narayan’s family allegedly demanded more money and went on to harass her, eventually forcing her out of the house with her minor son. Pavithra stayed with her mother and tried to return home several times, but when she failed, she approached the police. A senior police officer confirmed that notices were issued to Narayan and his family, directing them to appear for investigation.
S Narayan reacts to dowry allegations
According to India Today, responding to the allegations, S Narayan said, “It’s not surprising that she filed a case. My daughter-in-law left home 14 months ago; I didn’t know she had left. She hasn’t filed a complaint in 14 months. My father fought against dowry in 1960, and I am a filmmaker who gave a message against dowry. This is a weapon used against me and my family. We will fight in court.”
He added, “It’s a love marriage between my son and daughter-in-law. We didn’t resist because we wanted them to be happy.”
