During the promotions of Assi, leading lady Taapsee Pannu remarked that women-led and unconventional films are “on the verge of extinction”. Naturally, her statement caught the attention of many. Marathi actor and producer Neha Pendse notes that the Marathi film industry, in contrast, has long embraced women-
centric movies.

Pendse, whose film Tighi arrived in cinemas on March 6, believes Bollywood could learn from the regional ecosystem. “This might be true to some extent in the Hindi industry, but the Marathi film industry has backed women-centric storytelling since ages. Marathi films have always valued women,” said the actor.
Tighi, also starring Bharati Achrekar and Sonalee Kulkarni, tells the story of two estranged sisters who reunite when their mother falls sick. For Pendse, backing the movie was a personal decision. “I love women-led stories. I’m proud of the spine, strength, and intellect we possess. I can’t wait to see more of this being celebrated in Hindi films too,” she shared.
