Still from Sarvam Maya

Nivin Pauly is back on the big screen with the Malayalam film Sarvam Maya, which reunites him with actor Aju Varghese. The duo share a highly successful onscreen pairing, and their comic timing has long been admired by audiences. Directed by Akhil Sathyan, Sarvam Maya is a horror-comedy drama that was released in theatres worldwide on Christmas. The film’s advance bookings in Kerala looked promising, aided by the festive holiday release. Since its release, netizens have shared their reactions online, with the verdict largely unanimous — “Nivin Pauly is back!”

Sarvam Maya X reviews

On Thursday, audiences who caught the first-day-first-show took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their reviews. Netizens have praised the film’s comedy, charm, narrative, and Nivin Pauly’s screen presence, calling it a worthy comeback for the actor. Sarvam Maya is directed by Akhil Sathyan, who made his directorial debut with the 2023 film Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum starring Fahadh Faasil. That feel-good film was an instant hit, and Akhil once again opts for a feel-good tone, this time blending it with horror and comedy.

Here are some of the tweets you must read before making your plans to watch the film in theatres this weekend:

Nivin Pauly on his flop streak

Sarvam Maya has the potential to mark Nivin Pauly’s grand comeback at the box office. Known for hits like Thattathin Marayathu, Om Shaanthi Oshana, Bangalore Days, Premam, and more, the actor has not delivered a major box office hit in recent years. Apart from a memorable cameo in the 2024 film Varshangalkku Shesham, he has largely struggled at the box office.

In a recent conversation with Pearle Maaney on her YouTube channel, Nivin reflected on his career and shared how he was often advised to explore different genres and improve as an actor. Speaking in Malayalam, he said, “There was a point in my life when I was confused. My friends and people close to me kept telling me that I shouldn’t just do entertainer films and that, as an actor, I should improve like others.”

He added, “They kept advising me that I wasn’t showcasing my full potential as an actor. They wanted me to do thriller films and other genres, not just comedy films. They felt that if I continued to do only comedy movies, I would become forgettable. At that moment, I also felt that maybe they were right. Maybe I should try different things as an actor. However, after I changed my choice of films to suit other genres, the same people came back and told me how much they missed my comedy films. I was like, ‘Weren’t you the ones who asked me to change?’”
