Diljit Dosanjh’s Sardaar Ji 3 set a new record in Pakistan by surpassing the opening day collections of Salman Khan’s Sultan, despite being released only overseas due to political tensions
Diljit Dosanjh
Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3 has been mired in controversy over its casting. The film, which was released last week, marks the Indian film debut of Pakistani artist Hania Aamir. Due to the current geopolitical tensions between the two countries following the Pahalgam terror attack, India banned collaborations with Pakistani artists. Since Sardaar Ji 3 was shot before the attacks, the makers decided to release the film only overseas. While the makers were aware of the box office impact of skipping an India release, the film has definitely surprised at the global box office.
Sardaar Ji 3 global collection
According to the makers, in its opening weekend, Sardaar Ji 3 impressed at the box office with a whopping Rs 18.1 crore collection. The film collected Rs 4.32 crore on opening day (June 27). Day 2 saw collections go up to Rs 6.71 crore. On Day 3, the film collected Rs 7.07 crore. The total worldwide collection came up to Rs 18.1 crore globally.
A major share of the collection came from Pakistan. The film collected PKR 3.5 crore on the opening day in the country. With this, Sardaar Ji 3 became the highest-opening Indian film in Pakistan, beating the record held by Salman Khan’s Sultan. The Ali Abbas Zafar film had collected PKR 3.4 crore on the opening day back in 2016.
Naseeruddin Shah supports Diljit Dosanjh
Amid the controversy, Diljit faced severe backlash for working with Hania Aamir and then promoting the film. Naseeruddin Shah voiced his support for the Punjabi singer-actor earlier this week. However, he later deleted the post. He stated that Diljit was not the one responsible for casting Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in the movie. Shah shared, “I STAND FIRMLY WITH DILJIT. The dirty tricks dept of Jumla Party has been awaiting a chance to attack him. They think they’ve got it at last. He was not responsible for the casting of the film, the director was. But no one knows who he is whereas Diljit is known the world over, and he agreed to the cast because his mind is not poisoned.”
Imtiaz Ali supports Diljit
Prior to this, Diljit’s Chamkila director, Imtiaz Ali, also came out in his support, saying he is not someone who fakes things.
"I don't know the details, but casting someone isn’t the decision of the actor. I don’t know how it went, but I know that uske andar desh prem bahut zyada hai (He loves his country very much). Jo log dekh paayenge unke andar ke sach ko, unko yeh samajh mein aa jaayega (People who can see the truth will understand),” the Tamasha maker revealed.
