Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan is scheduled for release in theatres across the globe on January 9. However, uncertainty looms over the film’s release as the makers continue to grapple with the Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) demands. The CBFC is yet to certify the film, and the matter is currently being heard at the Madras High Court. While several theatre chains opened bookings well in advance, major chains such as PVR and Cinepolis are yet to commence ticket sales.

Major theatre chains await verdict

It is unusual for leading theatre chains to delay advance bookings this close to a film’s release. However, amid uncertainty surrounding Jana Nayagan’s censor certification, major exhibitors are waiting for clarity before opening bookings.

All about the CBFC row

As the release date approaches, the producers of Jana Nayagan have filed a plea before the Madras High Court, seeking directions to the CBFC to issue a censor certificate, according to PTI. Justice P.T. Asha heard the plea and verbally requested the CBFC to provide a copy of the complaint received against the film by the following day. The court has posted the matter for further hearing on Wednesday, January 7.

Questioning the urgency of the release, the judge reportedly asked, “Why can’t the film’s release be postponed from the 10th?” according to Cinema Express, referencing the Tamil proverb, “Thai pirandhaal vazhi pirakkum” (With the advent of Thai, a way will emerge). The court, however, directed that details of the complainant be disclosed to the court after the completion of the censorship process.

As per Bar and Bench, the CBFC’s Examining Committee had earlier recommended a UA 16+ certificate after the makers complied with suggested cuts and modifications. The film was later referred to the Revising Committee following a complaint regarding its alleged content.

Mumbai sells out 4 am shows

In Mumbai, the first show of Jana Nayagan has been scheduled as early as 4 am and is already sold out. Currently, only a limited number of theatres in the city have opened advance bookings, with more screens expected to be added in the coming days.

At Chembur’s Movietime Cubic Mall, shows have been scheduled for 4 am, 4.30 am, and 5 am. The first two shows are sold out, while the 5 am and 7.30 am shows are almost sold out. Meanwhile, MovieMax in Sion has scheduled a 4.30 am show, while several other theatres have their first screenings slated for 6 am.
