On the sets of Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, Silambarasan TR wasn’t just an actor. He doubled up as a fan as he shared screen space with his childhood idol Kamal Haasan in the gangster drama. “We all should dream big,” he starts, elated at how his dream found its way to realisation. “When I was a kid, I thought my dream was quite big, and finally it happened.”
The June 5 release marks Silambarasan TR’s first collaboration with Haasan, who plays a father figure to him. Thug Life is highly anticipated as it marks the superstar’s reunion with Ratnam after 38 years. Even for Silambarasan TR, the coming together of the two icons has been a bigger take-away than his own involvement in the film. “I was privileged that I got the opportunity to work with Kamal sir and Mani sir in the same movie. After so many years, they are coming back together. So more than me being a part, I’m excited to see what they have done. I have the same feelings as the audience.”
Sharing screen space with one’s idol can be nerve-wracking. Was it difficult to separate the professional and the fanboy in him while shooting? He reflects, “Subconsciously, I was observing him and learning from him. At the same time, I was doing my job. So, that was a little weird. But I told myself, ‘You are also performing in the film, so you better perform well. Later you won’t get the chance.’”
