SS Rajamouli confirmed that Varanasi will be filmed in the rare 1.43:1 IMAX format, marking a major technological leap for Telugu cinema. Fans, however, pointed out that Hyderabad currently has no IMAX screens to support such a release
SS Rajamouli
SS Rajamouli announced the title of his next film starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran on Saturday at a grand event in Hyderabad. The film, titled Varanasi, will be heavy on visuals and promises to use new technology to give audiences a breathtaking experience. At the event, Rajamouli revealed that the film is being made specifically for IMAX, and the aspect ratio will be tailored for the format.
No IMAX screen in Hyderabad? SS Rajamouli reacts
He announced that the film will be shot in IMAX in the 1.43:1 aspect ratio. âWe are introducing a new technology to Telugu cinema. It will be a premium large-scale format filmed for IMAX,â he said.
However, India has limited IMAX screens, with the majority located in metro cities. After the announcement, a user pointed out that Hyderabad itself does not have any IMAX screens. The film is primarily being made in Telugu and will be dubbed in multiple languages.
A user asked on X, âThere is no IMAX in Hyderabad, where the actual event took place and this news was confirmed. Can we expect an IMAX in Hyderabad by 2027?â Another user replied, âLetâs hope.â
This caught Rajamouliâs attention, and he responded: âI really hope that by the time Varanasi releases, or even before, weâll at least have a 1.43 IMAX screen in India and an IMAX in my land Hyderabad. â
I really hope that by the time #Varanasi releases or even before, weâll at least have a 1.43 IMAX screen in India and an IMAX in my land Hyderabad. đ€đ€

SS Rajamouli reveals Varanasi is shot for IMAX
At the Globetrotter event, SS Rajamouli said, âFirstly, I would like to thank the Rachakonda Police Department. KL Narayan garu, thank you for bringing Mahesh and me together. Usually, before my films, I hold a press meet and narrate the story â it became a tradition. But actually, I donât do that for every film. For âBaahubaliâ, I didnât. If there is scope, we will; if not, we wonât. For this film, we wonât. But we wanted to release an announcement video to set the expectations right. We planned it for March but couldnât. Then the rains came⊠and now, on November 14, we are finally coming with that video. Itâs becoming difficult to keep referring to it as âthis filmâ without revealing the title.â
Lauding Superstar Krishna, he said, âI didnât know much about the greatness of Superstar Krishna garu earlier. I was a fan of NTR garu, but after entering the industry, I understood Krishna garuâs legacy. To introduce a new technology, you must break many norms, and he did that with multiple films. Today, I am proud to say we are introducing a new format to Telugu cinema: a premium large-scale format, filmed for IMAX. You might think, âArenât there already IMAX films?â The ones we usually watch are blown-up versions of the CinemaScope print. But a few films, like âBaahubaliâ and âRRRâ, were actually shot, mastered, and VFX-finished specifically for the format. This film too is being created for IMAX in the truest sense.â
