It's a story inspired by true events, says Biswa Kalyan Rath, the conceptualiser of the new Amazon Prime show, Laakhon Mein Ek. A popular name in the comedy circuit, Rath chooses a dark subject for his web outing. The six-episode series revolves around Aakash Gupta, played by Ritvik Sahore of Dangal fame, who nurtures ambitions of being a star and is the happiest when mimicking Amitabh Bachchan. But in a bid to realise his father's dreams, he puts his own away and is sent to a residential coaching institute to prepare for IIT entrance exam.
Despite sincere efforts, Aakash finds himself at the bottom of the class, realising all too well that the IITs are not his cup of tea. His friendship with Chudail (Alam Khan) and Bakri (Jay Thakkar) is his only respite. How he adopts sneaky ways to lift his grades, and his impending downfall form the rest of the story. Director Abhishek Sengupta keeps the story and picturisation as real as possible. Sahore is a treat to watch as he depicts the frustration of a youngster who is a victim of insurmountable expectations. Thakkar as Bakri provides ample laughter with his quirkiness.
While there have been movies that boast of a similar plot, this one still strikes a chord. Rath has a blink-and-miss role, and is right when he says that he's not a great actor. Laakhon Mein Ek is a powerful drama that shows how youngsters are all but crumbling under the pressures of the education system.
