Chennai’s two-century-old St. George’s Cathedral, located on Cathedral Road, has recently undergone a significant renovation. Here’s a look at the history and unique features of this architectural and spiritual landmark.
History
Built in 1815 during the British East India Company’s rule, St. George’s Cathedral stands as one of Chennai’s most enduring symbols of colonial architecture and faith. Designed by engineer Sir J.L. Caldwell, the cathedral once served as the spiritual heart of the Anglican community in South India and continues to be an important place of worship to this day.
Architecture
Constructed in the elegant Neo-Classical style, the cathedral is characterized by its tall, graceful spire, stately Corinthian pillars, and a serene white façade that reflects both simplicity and grandeur. The building’s symmetry and timeless design make it an architectural treasure, often admired for the balance it strikes between strength and serenity.
Religious significance
Inside the Cathedral, there are stained glass windows on either side of the altar that describe two important events in the life of Jesus. The left panel vividly depicts the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the River Jordan. Meanwhile, the panel on the right depicts the resurrected Lord with Mary Magdalene.
Evolution
Today, St. George’s Cathedral continues to hold immense historical and religious significance. It serves as the official seat of the Bishop of Madras and remains a cherished landmark — a space where faith, art, and history converge at the heart of Chennai.
Other Anglican Churches in Chennai
Alongside St. George’s Cathedral, Chennai is home to several other historic Anglican churches that trace their origins to the colonial era. Notable among them are St. Mary’s Church in Fort St. George, which is also the oldest Anglican church in India — and St. Thomas English Church in Santhome.
