As the city-based iconic ice cream parlour shut for renovations earlier this week after the FDA suspended its licence, here's everything you need to know about the popular establishment near Marine Drive

Who started K Rustom & Co?
The iconic ice cream shop off Churchgate railway station on the way to Marine Drive was started by Iranian immigrant Khodabux Rustom Irani, who was popularly known as K Rustom

Turning into an ice cream parlour
It was a department store then and started selling ice cream in 1953 because of how many visitors came to Marine Drive, and has been serving Mumbaikars and tourists all kinds of refreshments since then

Popular for ice cream sandwiches and more
K Rustom & Co has become synonymous with ice cream sandwiches over the years, and are known to be one of the first to serve them in the city. They not only served chocolate variations but also seasonal flavours like the mango ice cream sandwich, apart from serving litchi sherbet and more over the years, according to fans

Among the world's most iconic ice creams
Gaining global recognition over the years, K Rustom & Co. was also featured in the top 25 on TasteAtlas’s ‘100 Most Iconic Ice Creams’ list in the world for its popular Mango Ice cream Sandwich in June 2025

Popular at the ice cream parlour
While the mango ice cream sandwich is among the most popular items from there, even as it is currently closed, many Mumbaikars who hope that it reopens soon say you should try the chocolate ice cream sandwich, litchi sherbet and mango lassi over the years, and swear by it
