Timeless beauty Heera Sohal on Meena Kumari

From sharing the screen with Randeep Hooda to landing a role in Salman Khan’s upcoming film ‘Maatrubhumi,’ Heera Sohal is steadily carving a place for herself in the film industry. This week, the comely kudi nominates the ethereal Meena Kumari for our Timeless Beauty honour.

“It’s hard to define what exact quality makes Meena Kumari such a timeless beauty, but there is something about her that I can never stop admiring. Not just her face, but her presence. Her eyes had so much emotion in them. She had this simple, graceful kind of beauty that never felt forced. And then there is ‘Pakeezah.’ I feel like that film is such a beautiful reflection of everything I love about her. The elegance, the softness, the sadness, the poetry, and that old-world femininity. Watching her in ‘Pakeezah,’ I don’t just see a beautiful woman; I see someone who carries so much emotion without having to say much. I love how feminine and delicate she looked, but there was also so much depth in her. She didn’t need anything extra to hold your attention. Her eyes, her expressions, her voice — everything had a certain magic. Maybe that’s why I adore her so much. Her beauty doesn’t belong to one particular era. It still feels beautiful today, and I think it always will.”

Goan Getaway

Ravi Kishan is a man who wears many hats, seamlessly balancing the demands of being a seasoned actor and an active politician. Yet, even for someone adept at juggling movie sets and parliamentary sessions, carving out time to unwind is often the hardest task. Fresh off the energy of FICCI Frames in Mumbai this Wednesday — where he turned heads while shaking a leg with cricketer Irfan Pathan — the actor-politician wasted no time switching from fast-paced showbiz to vacation mode.

His destination of choice? The sun-drenched shores of Goa. Word is, his family had already set up camp in scenic Vagator, soaking in the laid-back coastal rhythm for a few days before he rushed to join them on Thursday. We suspect the getaway doubles as a belated celebration for his wife Priti’s late September birthday. Either way — whether it was birthday plans or simply a much-needed family break — the Kishans seem to have found the perfect excuse to trade packed schedules for palm trees. After all, sometimes the best way to wear all those hats is to take them off for a little while.

A Familiar Flourish

History, they say, has a funny habit of repeating itself. In cricket, it occasionally repeats itself with a flourish, a raised bat and, if you’re lucky, rather distinctive headgear.

When Shubman Gill celebrated reaching 200 during the India vs West Indies ODI on Wednesday, the echoes from four decades ago were hard to miss. “Two iconic celebrations 40 years apart,” Rohan Gavaskar was quick to point out on Thursday. And he was right. The scene had a wonderfully familiar ring to it.
Back in the day, when Sunil Gavaskar reached his 33rd Test century, the celebration had been nothing short of theatrical. As celebrated Australian writer Mike Coward recalled in The Sportstar, Gavaskar was mobbed by ecstatic devotees, garlanded with rupee notes and, amid fireworks and a sustained standing ovation, placed his white sun hat atop his bat and held it aloft.

Forty years on, the details may have changed, but the picture somehow remains. The celebration was different, the cricketer was different, but the visual echo was unmistakable — a new generation of Indian cricket conjuring up an image from one of its most memorable chapters.
Rohan shone a spotlight on the dramatic historical parallel. But what yours truly can share exclusively is this: it was our in-house cricket nut who provided the image of the magazine cover that finally made its way to Gavaskar junior’s post. Sometimes history repeats itself. Sometimes, it just needs a little help from a well-stocked personal archive.

Purr-fect Little Rescue

Aneet Padda has the kind of face that makes you think she’d stop mid-sentence to rescue a butterfly. So, it comes as no surprise to discover that the Saiyaara star has recently adopted a stray kitten. As we hear it, Aneet chanced upon the little one in a sorry state in her building compound and decided almost instantly that there was no way she was leaving it there. And just like that, a stray found herself with a new home — and a very doting human.

Of course, Aneet’s fondness for animals isn’t exactly a secret. Last year, she spent some time at an animal shelter in Goregaon — an experience she described rather adorably. “Spent some time with these souls who love without language. Left with fur on my clothes and calm in my chest,” she said.

Well, this time around, the fur seems to have followed her home. And somehow, we can’t think of a more fitting ending. Aneet may have rescued the kitten, but something tells us this little one has already decided to return the favour — with purrs, cuddles and the sort of uncomplicated affection animals are so good at giving.

Forty years on, the details may have changed, but the picture somehow remains
