The princess and the Pooch

Karisma Kapoor greets an unexpected admirer on Wednesday — a friendly stray on the sets of a dance reality show in Goregaon.

Goa on repeat

If you thought we Mumbaikars hold the exclusive patent on using Goa as our emotional decompression chamber at the faintest hint of a long weekend, think again. Hyderabad, it turns out, is giving us a serious run for our money.

Case in point: actor Allu Sirish and his gorgeous wife, Nayanika Reddy, who have decamped from the Deccan metropolis for yet another Goan sojourn, trailing a curated handful of friends in their wake. Their chosen sanctuary? A fiercely plush, hyper-private villa tucked discreetly away in Vagator, comfortably insulated from the holidaying hordes.
And don’t mistake this for a fleeting flirtation. As Nayanika wryly notes, it has been “Goa on repeat since 2013” — a sentiment underlined by the fact that the couple was doing precisely this just back in July. Clearly, whether your starting point is Pali Hill or Jubilee Hills, when the coast calls, you answer.

A venetian affair

Venice has often been described as the world’s most surreal meeting place for imagination — and on September 7, that spirit was very much alive at Palazzina Grassi, where Liberatum Art & Cinema brought together a constellation of artists, dreamers, provocateurs and visionaries.
Rohini Iyer and Debi Mazar
Among those celebrated were Younger star Debi Mazar, Schiaparelli scion and model Marisa Berenson, Spanish actress Rossy de Palma, and American filmmaker Lee Daniels. But for us, the evening had a distinctly Indian pulse. Filmmaker Mozez Singh and entrepreneur Rohini Iyer held fort for Indian cinema and its increasingly global creative voice, adding a homegrown presence to a room otherwise filled with international names.
The gathering also drew Austrian actor Nadiv Molcho, Moroccan footballer Achraf Lazaar, and Missoni heiress Angela Missoni, making for the kind of eclectic cultural cross-pollination that Venice does so effortlessly.

Spinning stories

Harbhajan Singh is booked. Over a warm chat at the last Mid Wicket Stories meet-up in Mumbai, India’s inimitable turbanator casually let slip that his autobiography is finally in the works.

The cheeky part? He broke the news to none other than Matthew Hayden — his fiercest Aussie antagonist from that unforgettable 2001 showdown, now an amicable cohort over mics and musings. How times change: far from dodging Bhajji’s bouncers, Hayden has generously offered to help promote the memoir once it hits the shelves.

Meanwhile, the literary circuit has another heavyweight tribute on the horizon. Anju Bedi has lovingly curated a collection of articles celebrating her late husband, the legendary Bishan Singh Bedi. The launch is slated for September 25 in New Delhi, where the guest list will most likely feature a stylish confluence of the capital’s vintage sporting aristocracy and literary mainstays. Consider your social calendar alerted — I’ll be back with all the chatter and the juiciest whispers from that soiree later this month.

Flying high

At 40,000 feet, somewhere between the clouds and the curated glow of an Emirates upper-deck lounge, Usha Nehwal leans back, looking thoroughly chuffed as her Olympic-medallist daughter’s camera rolls.
Saina Nehwal’s mother, Usha
En route to Los Angeles for a Club Championship North America event in Manhattan Beach later this week, the setting is undeniably plush — the kind of luxury that feels miles away from the pre-dawn grind of the Hyderabad badminton courts where this story actually began.
Behind the lens is Saina Nehwal, capturing the quiet poetry of the moment. Long before premium cabin comfort came years of sheer, unglamorous hustle: Usha waking at ungodly hours, cooking calibrated meals, and massaging aching young legs that carried the weight of an entire nation’s sporting ambitions. “Her thinking was way ahead of its time,” Saina has noted, grateful for a mother who traded convention for fierce, relentless backing.
On that flight toward the California coast a few days ago, those sacrifices had clearly matured into sweet, well-earned indulgence. Truly, it was heartwarming to watch Saina frame her mum as the star of the show — the woman who built the foundation also getting to soak in the view from the top.

Clearly, whether your starting point is Pali Hill or Jubilee Hills, when the coast calls, you answer.
