Few musicals have prowled through popular culture quite like Cats. Based on T S Eliot&rsquo;s poems and powered by Andrew Lloyd Webber&rsquo;s unforgettable score, the feline phenomenon finally stretched, purred and pounced onto the stage at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre on Wednesday night.

As expected, opening night was as much about the audience as the incredible Jellicle cats. Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal waltzed in looking every bit the star couple, delivering on the dress code in black. Musician Sulaiman Merchant and wife Reshma made it a family outing with daughter Amayra in tow. Comedian Atul Khatri arrived with wife Shaguna, while choreographer Bosco Martis appeared especially engrossed &mdash; taking in the athletic choreography and precision staging with a professional&rsquo;s appreciation.

The Ambani clan may not have arrived en masse, but even a partial roll call was enough to shift the room&rsquo;s centre of gravity. Bijal Meswani was in attendance, while matriarch Kokilaben Ambani arrived in a wheelchair accompanied by what seemed like a small battalion of staff. Seated in a private Diamond Box, she watched the performance with unmistakable delight.

The world of film was well represented, with Guneet Monga in attendance, while actors including Shriya Pilgaonkar, Kubbra Sait, and Sayani Gupta watched on. Meanwhile, Rochelle Rao looked stunning in red &mdash; though someone clearly forgot to tell her the official memo was yellow or black.
By curtain call, the cats had landed, the crowd had purred its approval, and Mumbai society had delivered its own parallel performance. As opening nights go, this one had claws, class and just the right amount of catty energy.
<h2>Every Dog Has Its Day</h2>
Wednesday night may have been ruled by Cats, but Tuesday was dedicated to a very special dog whose social calendar is officially better than mine. Triptii Dimri threw a blowout bash at her swanky new Bandra home for her pet Lychee &mdash; undeniably &ldquo;the sweetest fruit in the basket.&rdquo; Between the hand-painted, personalised birthday bunting and an absolute sea of party balloons, it was quite a day for the gorgeous golden retriever.

The pure, shrieking excitement from Triptii&rsquo;s nieces was perfectly matched by the chaotic energy of the guest list, which heavily featured furry, four-legged creatures just living their absolute best lives. And don&rsquo;t even get me started on the menu &mdash; forget a sad dog biscuit, this soir&eacute;e boasted several gourmet doggie cakes! Honestly, bless the lovely Larissa Bonesi for bringing Lychee into Triptii&rsquo;s life, even if this fabulous puppy party sets a frankly impossible standard for the rest of us.
<h2>Purr-fect Birthday</h2>
As if Cats didn&rsquo;t offer enough thrills already, another crowd-pleasing moment unfolded at Wednesday&rsquo;s premiere. It was a purr-fectly timed (if entirely coincidental) celebration for Mandira Bedi and son Vir Kaushal, who marked his 15th birthday in the most theatrical fashion imaginable.&nbsp;

Accompanied by a lively pack of friends, the birthday boy looked every bit the cool teenager, while his mum committed wholeheartedly to the feline brief. Dressed in the evening&rsquo;s official palette of black and yellow, Mandira even sported striking cat-like contact lenses that would have earned approving nods from the Jellicle tribe themselves.
A night at Cats comes with plenty of magic built in, but this outing had an extra surprise waiting in the wings. Just when the gang thought the evening couldn&rsquo;t get any sweeter, the team at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre pulled off a gesture worthy of its own applause. During the interval, out rolled a birthday cake for Vir, transforming a fun night at the theatre into a celebration he is unlikely to forget anytime soon.
