Pont Du Gard, France
Built between 63 and 12 BC, the Pont Du Gard over the Gard River in France wasn't constructed to transport people (there is a footbridge though). Instead, it was part of an aqueduct system that carried five million gallons of water, over 50 kms, all the way to the Roman city of Nemausus (now N ufffdmes). Built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, son-in-law of Caesar Augustus, it's considered an engineering and architectural marvel till today.

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

There was a time, when building this iconic symbol on America's East Coast was believed to be an impossible task. It's considered as one of the world's best examples of a suspension bridge, and took a little over four years to build, at a then prohibitive cost of $27 million. The colour of the Golden Gate Bridge is actually not red but an orange vermilion called International Orange. The colour was chosen specifically to highlight its visibility on foggy days.

Wind And Rain Bridge, Chengyang
Traditionally, wind and rain bridges were built to protect travellers from the natural elements, while crossing mighty rivers. One of the most beautiful examples is the Chengyang Bridge over the Linxi River, in Southern China. Over 100 years old, it was built with dovetailed wood and without using a single nail.
