This secluded village in Sindhudurg is famous for its long, narrow stretches of white sand. The water is clean, cool and on a clear day you can see the seabed through 20 kms of water.

This is the ideal place to kick back and soak up the sun, though it does have its share of history too; the Sindhudurg fort, which is one of Maharashtra's most famous sea forts and was built in the 17th century by Shivaji Maharaj is located here.

Fishing is an annual activity at Tarkarli, and during the monsoon the experience of fishing in the backwaters is something else.

Don't expect uber luxe pampering when it comes to accommodation. The operative word being rural here, the state-run MTDC lets out huts (non-AC), plus there are several guesthouses to choose from.

How to Reach: Tarkarli is 546 kilometres from Mumbai. It's best to hire a private vehicle for this ride.

We're sure that lake-crazy Clooney will love the setting at Arthur's Lake in Bhandardara. Situated on the Pravara Riveris, Bhandardara is a popular holiday resort village.

If you're in the mood for some action, you could trek up to the Ratangad or Harishchandragad forts, or, if you're really up for a challenge, up to Mount Kalsubai, the highest peak in Maharashtra.
