Using art as a means to communicate societal issues is a great way to spread awareness. Andheri-based Program Trinity, a contemporary dance training programme, co-founded by Mukta Nagpal and Ashish Rao, aims to do that with their performance, The Zone. With dance as the core focus, they aim to focus on freedom of expression.

Nagpal discusses the programme and themes of the contemporary dance performance. She says, “It is a showcase curated by Program Trinity to celebrate and encourage the artistry of their young dancers and choreographers. The themes of push and pull, as well as freedom, are all intertwined. Push and pull represent the resistance one feels in being acknowledged and accepted.” The dance is choreographed by Mukta Nagpal, Ashish Rao, and Jainil Mehta.
Mukta Nagpal
She explains how the theme will be relevant to people, “We are living in chaotic times characterised by political, economic, and cultural distress. People’s voices are not just discouraged but shunned when they question the system and society. In an attempt to be a part of a community, we alter ourselves, our thoughts, and our actions. Freedom is political, and wanting freedom implies being vocal. The pieces at The Zone reflect this sentiment and create a space of dissent, inviting the audience to engage with us. We as dancers and choreographers present our thoughts, but we also ask the viewers to ask questions and instigate discussion, not just at The Zone but also beyond it.”

Rao adds, “With this performance, we aim to continue the evolution of contemporary dance, not merely as a form, but as a powerful voice and medium of expression for artistes and artistes in the making. In doing so, we acknowledge the immense skill and hard work it demands, no less than any other discipline.”
