If you are an enthusiast of Western classical music, you would not want to miss this special violin recital tomorrow (October 14), led by a pair of musical virtuosos, who will use the synergy of their respective skills to mesmerise audiences. Organised by the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation (MMMF) in Mumbai, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the Republic of India, the evening will see young talent, 36-year-old Dominican violinist Aisha Syed Castro performing alongside Swedish pianist Emma Tillu. The concert will also feature the MMMF String Ensemble.

We caught up with Mehroo Jeejeebhoy, founder of Mehli Mehta Music Foundation, who shared details of the upcoming performance. “Aisha is an Honorary Cultural Ambassador of the Dominican Republic, and is performing here with us after several years. The previous time, we had arranged a concert at The Royal Opera House in Girgaon,” Jeejeebhoy told us. The musician is a student of the Menuhin School, Royal College of Music, and Guildhall School, and performs at festivals and concerts around the world. Acclaimed as one of the youngest and most outstanding violinists globally, Syed is particularly popular for her ability to ace the instrument under pressure.

“The programme that we have designed tomorrow is such that, in the first half, Aisha will be performing alongside various students from the foundation. There is one student in particular who is highly talented and she will be performing alongside Aisha as a soloist,” Jeejeebhoy shared. She added, “The rest of the ensemble will be playing alongside the two.” The founder has explained that the collaboration of the Embassy of the Dominican Republic with the foundation is a symbol of cultural goodwill being shared between two nations.

The second half of the recital will include Syed performing a series of solo pieces, including notable musical works by legendary composers Edvard Grieg, Johann Sebastian Bach and Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate, in addition to a few others on the repertoire. “Emma Tillu, who will also be performing on stage, has long been an instructor at the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation,” Jeejeebhoy added.
