Monopoly’s origins date back to an American, Elizabeth Magie Phillips, in 1903 who called it “The Landlord’s Game.” Ironically, Phillips was trying to show people how bad it was when a few wealthy individuals controlled all the land. Over time, it gained widespread popularity when Charles Darrow, sold the rights of his homemade version to the Parker Brothers in 1935.

Aryan Agarwal, Monopoly expert and senior bank officer, reminisces, “I remember when the game flooded toy stores in 2008, and I requested my dad to buy me a game so it would be a new addition for the games we would play with friends in our housing complex. Back then, I would play it daily, to ensure I excelled at it, which included tricks, tips and maybe an occasional cheat code to make sure I tilt the game my way.”

Tips

1 Buy a lot of properties in the first few minutes
2 Collect the same-colour properties; build houses, and increase money, which will give you double the amount of money
3 Even though it doesn’t seem like it, spend money initially. Trust that the outcome will be better

Tricks

1 Buy properties around the ‘Go’ tile, as people are bound to logically end up there around it
2 Stay in jail so you don’t acquire public property and end up paying rent but you are still earning money as people who pass by your property still need to pay
3 Auction properties as the bid will go to the highest bidder which in turn will benefit you

Golden rule

“Even though it can get overwhelming, your strategy should not waver. Try to manage the cash flow of money, for others as well as your own. Make a trade where you make money and others run out of it” mentions Agarwal.

Pop culture x Monopoly

Since Monopoly seemed like a must-have game in every household, the makers decided to niche up their audience, and thus, emerged Pokémon Monopoly (2024), Star Wars (2016) and most importantly, the Monopoly which has Indian cities (launched in the late 1980s).
