Keen to redefine waste and be a part of the upcycling movement? Head to Kurla this weekend for the second edition of The Kabaad Mela. The two-day fest, organised by Kabaad ka Jugaad, an initiative by non-profit Proinnovate, will feature an upcycling competition and workshops as well as pop-up shops and performances.

"Last year, we had 100 participants at the competition. This year, the number has risen to 350 [87 teams], of which we have shortlisted 37 teams to showcase their products," says the founder of Kabaad ka Jugaad, Harshil Vora.

If you didn't make the cut, you can take a shot at a fashion upcycling competition called Kachra into Kapda, or test your mettle in Kachron Ke Khiladi, an obstacle course race. For the curious, there is also a treasure hunt. While entry to the event is free, there will be a nominal registration fee (between Rs 50 and Rs 200) for each competition.

The upcycling theme runs through the festival. "We have created a Junk Arcade, which will feature games such as life-size Jenga, Foosball and Air Hockey, all made using waste material. There is also an activity called Jam with Junk, where you can play drums made, again, using waste buckets and cans," adds Vora.

You don't need to have prior knowledge of upcycling to be able to have fun at the event, as there will be volunteers to guide you throughout. Vora says, "The goal is to educate and provide a hands-on experience of upcycling and its applications to people."
