Pop quiz for our old school readers, how many of these genres can you recognise? J-pop, G-pop, K-pop, I-pop. Don’t rack your brains; they’re all real genres. The most recent to taste popularity, behind Japanese- and Korean-pop is Gujarati-pop. Swara Oza, a third-generation musician, has found virality on social media for her videos that look right out of an international pop song, while being rooted in her mother tongue.
Oza comes from a family of musicians, including her mother Neema Oza, a vocalist, and father Mitesh Oza, a percussionist, who will join her onstage. Talk about keeping up with times, it’s the folk singer in the family, Neema who conceptualised the idea to familiarise Gen Z with the language. While we’re not fluent in the language, we found ourselves tapping our feet to the Ozas’ catchy experimental tunes. Catch this wave before it becomes mainstream, we’d say.
