Despite its many issues, Mumbai has much to be loved for. Yet, a new generation might require some incentive. The latest tabletop board game, Flyovers &amp; Potholes, by Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) approaches this idea with a blend of creativity and an old-school gameplay.

Conceptualised by convenor Katyayani Agarwal, and designed by co-convenor, Mumbai, Rajul Dhaimade, the board game is inspired from the simple Snakes and Ladders. &ldquo;The main inspiration was to make the act of urban conservation relatable for a younger generation,&rdquo; reveals Dhaimade.

Smooth flyovers and fun activities replace the ladders, while tasks like littering, potholes, and traffic jams replace the Snakes. Sustainability is also a part of its design. And so, the board comes printed on reusable, hand-spun khadi while the dice and coins are handcrafted on wood.
<h2>What&rsquo;s on board?</h2>
Having played a few rounds, we quickly gauge that the game is best suited for players aged eight and above. The handspun khadi makes for an interesting board, but feels a little small in size. However, this is offset by the informative card &mdash; imprinted with trivia &mdash; that accompany the game, explaining its rules, as well as the iconic landmarks that show up on the route to victory.
It certainly proves informative. Along with the visuals of landmarks like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Kanheri Caves, and Art Deco buildings, the hurdles also carry reminders of the city&rsquo;s ills from littering, to traffic jams, vandalism of landmarks, and loud music. Handy reminders on things to avoid even in real life.
&ldquo;This is a step to encourage the next generation in taking ownership of the city,&rdquo; concludes Dhaimade. It does seem like a fun way to start.
