A reboot of the popular show is on the horizon, and fans are already discussing new twists and turns it will take. Three of them share their views

Relatability is key

The reboot will be quite bland in the absence of Samantha. She was the spunky one and brought the ‘sex’ to Sex and the City. Without her, the series runs a real risk of being three elderly women pottering along without much to show for it. However, I think the creators may focus on Carrie Bradshaw writing about relationships from her eyes. With Miranda, who was an aggressive feminist, how has her marriage and son changed her? With Charlotte, has her marriage aged well? Has she gone through her share of strife and struggles? The creators must also focus on being relatable — a lot of time has passed since the last season. The way we look at relationships, money or work has changed. The glamorous lifestyles will not pass muster unless they are justified. They may also need to relook Carrie’s financial dependence on Mr Big.

How have they aged?

While the series started out showcasing the lives of young women and then, subsequently, their mid-life crises, I think the reboot will focus more on the perspective of them as mature women. In that sense, I wonder if it will be relevant for audiences of my age. I watched the show in my early 20s and to catch up with them in their 50s may not be as exciting. For that reason, and the absence of Samantha, my expectations are limited. However, I’m curious to see if the decisions they made when the show ended panned out — does Carrie regret not having a child? Does Charlotte with her perfect marriage regret that she took that step too soon?

More diverse and dynamic

What makes SATC memorable is that, in a way, it pioneered the genre of chick-flicks. Going forward, I think that the series will definitely include contemporary elements such as social media, which has changed our lives in so many ways. In the past, the focus was more on the characters’ offline lives — now, I think at least a few characters will be active on social media and it will have a significant impact on the plot. I also think the creators will attempt to address changing societal and cultural trends. More topics that revolve around LGBTQiA+ issues, and cultural and community inclusions, will be a big part of the show.
