One way to describe music would be to call it a series of sounds, strung together to create magic. If this statement resonates with you, you might want to attend The Naad Collective. Organised by The Sound Space in collaboration with Kathiwada City House on September 16, the aim is to encourage like-minded people to indulge in dulcet tones, sing their hearts out, and celebrate the joy of music.
“We want to build a community, where we can enable everyone to find a voice of their own, and create a space for them to spend time with music,” shares Kamakshi Khurana, co-founder of The Sound Space. “[Attendees] can expect anything and everything related to music; it could be musical theories; on other occasions, we could discuss how everyone includes music in their daily lives; and of course, there will be live singing with the audiences.”

Vishala Khurana, Kamakshi’s sister and co-founder, says, “We wanted to make this on the lines of a book club. Almost everyone speaks about how they are a ‘music lover’, or are keen to explore new types of music. Hence, just like how people live [vicariously] through books, we wanted to make a space for those who use music to find direction.” In addition, there will be performances by guest artistes, providing an opportunity for attendees to witness their artistry and genius, and learn from them. “Going ahead, we would like to invite popular artistes to join this circle as well,” Vishala reveals.
Although The Naad Collective is a one-day session, the sisters share their desire to convert this into a monthly affair. “We definitely want to make this a weeknight-type of event, where people across ages can join to add value to this, especially working professionals,” says Vishala. The debut event will focus on Indian music, from folk and classical music to popular Bollywood beats, and soulful Sufi notes.
This event, however, isn’t merely for music. Sound is at its foundation. “We will be guiding our participants on the evolution of sound; its importance [in human life], and the history and philosophy behind it,” adds Kamakshi.
The sisters have been music fans since childhood, having trained in music education. At tomorrow’s event, they will be hosting as well as performing. “This event is for everyone to sing and enjoy; we don’t want anyone to feel left out — everyone can express themselves freely,” Kamakshi explains.
