DC Comics has announced that the latest edition of its Superman series will feature Jonathan Kent, who is bisexual. The announcement was made on National Coming Out Day in the US. This storyline, a part of the Superman: Son of Kal-El series, follows the original Superman Clark Kent’s son Jonathan, taking on the mantle of his father. The creator of the series argued that the decision was made keeping in mind changing social dynamics, and to lead the conversation of sexuality and identity to the forefront of the mainstream.
Superman is one of the oldest superheroes in comics, debuting as early as 1938. The DC Comics property has been a fan favourite for generations and has also been a major part of pop-culture lore. The various film adaptations of the comic book have seen multitudes of fans enter Superman’s world and the most recent success of the four-hour long Zack Snyder’s Justice League suggests that the fandom has not died down one bit.
