Nearly two decades since it first tore into the public consciousness, few movies have been as synonymous with the world of high fashion and the inner workings of trade glossies as the Anne Hathaway-Meryl Streep starrer, The Devil Wears Prada (2006). Now, as the dynamic duo preps to reprise their roles in the much-awaited sequel, it’s hard to not reminisce nostalgically about the outfits that started it all. mid-day readers who are prepping (mentally, emotionally and sartorially) for the sequel share fits from the original that still find a place in their wardrobes.

Leopard is the new neutral

There’s something about the effortlessness with which Meryl Streep pulled off a leopard print in the movie that makes it chic and almost understated. Yes, leopard is a bold print but, with the right combination, a mesh leopard print top can make you look bold, sleek, powerful and undeniably sexy. It’s one of the looks that resonated the most with me and one that I still gravitate towards when I want to feel especially put together.

All black with stockings

This iconic Anne Hathaway look from the movie is still as relevant as it was when the movie came out — it’s sharp, sleek and effortlessly cool. Especially when it comes to an all-black power dressing moment (below), it’s a masterclass in downtown chic, and no one serves that look better than her. Why I truly love this look is because it’s polished, and yet a shade rebellious, with the sheer tights and some statement jewellery. It gives just the right touch of glam and recreating it feels like paying homage to a fashion moment that still inspires today and is also relevant because it’s so timeless.

The moment I saw this look, I knew it was exactly my style — oversized jacket with a boxy skirt and high heel boots (above), it’s a perfect combination of laidback and chic. It’s powerful and something about it just makes me feel like myself. I honestly feel the most confident when I wear outfits like this. It’s comfortable but also makes me feel like I can run around the world. As soon as I wear the jacket and the boots, there’s this instant shift of energy in me.

The new face of tweed

Tailored and tweed were two staples of Miranda Priestley’s outfits (below) in the movie, and Anne Hathaway’s character eventually adopted elements of this fabric in her more sophisticated looks. Tweed has made a huge comeback in everyday fashion because of its association with all things classic and powerful. Of course, Mumbai’s humid weather makes it impractical to wear a layered look or a bulky overcoat, like the characters in the movie did, but I love a tailored tweed set that reimagines the trend in a more contemporary way.
