For this month’s Arts Adda, mid-day heads into the heart of Aarey to meet theatremaker Harshad Tambe. The director of the landmark Tarpa Theatre Festival tells us how a forest came together for the sake of art, and why performing arts festivals may need to go greener

Any visit to Aarey Forest comes with an old initiation ritual for this writer. Fresh mud silently creeps up onto the hem of our trousers, almost as if it knows we aren’t looking. The stain is a sign that we are far enough from the city to breathe easy. For actor Parna Pethe, who performed at the recently concluded Tarpa Theatre Festival, the signs were more colourful. She remembers butterflies and birds that seemed to gatecrash her performance of Tottochan, staged under a tree. She didn’t mind, of course.
