The quirkily named and shaped duck nails have been taking social media by storm. Here’s how to sport them with panache

After coffins, daggers, and stilettos, it’s now time for the humble duck to find its way to nail-art inspo, courtesy an all-new nail shape that resembles webbed duck feet. The shape is essentially an inversion of the traditional nail shape, as it flares out from the end of the finger, instead of tapering in.
The polarising style isn’t an entirely new one, however. In fact, back in 2012, reality TV star Snooki from Jersey Shore made it a part of her signature aesthetic. “At the time, they were known as fan tips or flared tips. The 2021 update has a few notable changes however, and nail art lovers are making the most of the extended acreage to create interesting designs,” shares Nitisha Menon, a nail artist and founder of Nailed It By Nits.

There are several ways you can sport this style, she says, with many loading their nails up with cutesy cupcake-style charms to create an extravagant look. For a slightly more pared-down version, you could recreate a classic French manicure with the nail shape serving as a good contrast for the over-the-top aesthetics of the shape. Other interesting ideas include choosing a theme you’d like to recreate across your hands, with each nail telling a part of the story, or simply painting them in a bright, vibrant colour to let the shape do the talking.
The duck-feet shape can be created in two ways, Menon explains: “If your nail stylist has suitable tips, these can be affixed to your nail bed. Or, the stylist would have to use nail forms, which are placed under your nails and act as a temporary base for applying gel or acrylic. The stylist can then build your nails to your desired length and shape. The forms are removed once the nail is built.” She warns that the shape is unwieldy and can be impractical depending on how often you work with your hands.
