A 31-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death in Navi Mumbai city of Maharashtra on suspicion of theft following which the police have arrested four people, officials said on Thursday, reported the PTI.

The Navi Mumbai Police's Crime Branch arrested four men for allegedly beating man to death, they said.


The victim, identified as Sandeep Laxmikant Vishwakarma, was a resident of Mankhurd area in eastern suburbs of Mumbai. He was reported missing on February 15, according to the PTI.



Officials said that his body was discovered the following day within the jurisdiction of Rabale MIDC Police Station.

An autopsy report confirmed that Vishwakarma died due to injuries sustained during an assault, according to a police press release.

Phone records led police to suspects

Investigators found through mobile phone records that Vishwakarma was in Vashi on February 15 and had spoken to a scrap dealer.

During questioning, police learnt that he was allegedly caught while attempting to steal electric poles and wires. The accused allegedly assaulted him, resulting in his death, and later transported his body in an autorickshaw before dumping it near a drain in the Mahape MIDC area, the news agency reported.

Accused held

According to the PTI, Sanket Jagtap, the autorickshaw driver, is said to have confessed that he and three others caught Vishwakarma stealing from electrical distribution points and beat him.

Police subsequently arrested Pritam Bharat Bhoir (26), Shivaji Shankar Dumbare (57) and Amol Ramesh Gunjal (31), who is an electrician.

Further investigation is underway.

Murder accused held from Palghar after year-long hunt

Meanwhile, in an another incident, the Thane Police arrested a 24-year-old man from Palghar who had been absconding for more than a year in connection with a murder during a New Year party in Thane district, officials had said on Sunday, reported the PTI.

The incident occurred in the Kashimira area in the wee hours of January 1, 2025, when the victim and his friends gathered for the celebration at the house of one of them.

While they were dancing to music being played on a sound system installed there, an argument broke out between one of them and a local man over the playing of a song, a police official said, according to the PTI.

The man later called his associates to the spot and they allegedly assaulted the victim and his friends with wooden sticks and other objects, the police said.

In the attack, Raja Pariyar sustained grievous injuries and died, while two of his friends were seriously injured, the official said, reported PTI.

Based on a complaint by one of the injured persons, the Kashimira police had registered a case on charges of murder and other offences against five absconding accused, reported PTI.

Based on technical analysis and specific information, the police traced one of the accused, identified as Aadesh alias Chala Prakash Jadhav, to Wakipada at Naigaon in Vasai in neighbouring Palghar district and took him into custody on February 19, the police said, reported PTI.

Search was underway for the other accused, the police said.
