Zeeshan Akhtar, the alleged mastermind behind the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique, has been detained by the Canadian authorities, said a source in Mumbai police.
Police sources claim they have received confirmation that Zeeshan is currently in the custody of Canadian law enforcement.
Zeeshan, a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, is said to have acted as the handler for the shooters involved in Siddique’s murder.
Zeeshan, whose real name is Mohammad Yasin Akhtar, is originally from Jalandhar and was previously arrested by the Punjab Police in 2022. His name surfaced in the investigation into Baba Siddique’s murder, as he allegedly managed three shooters: Dharmaraj Kashyap, Gurmel Baljeet Singh, and Shivkumar Gautam.
The Jalandhar Police had already registered several cases against Zeeshan. Notably, Zeeshan and Gurmel Singh were once cellmates in a Jalandhar jail.
Before being transferred to another jail in Jalandhar, Zeeshan discussed the plot to kill Siddiqui with Gurmel and assured him that he would soon have a task for him.
The charge sheet and police investigation reveal that Zeeshan had a close connection with Lawrence Bishnoi. In May of the previous year, Zeeshan and Shubham Lonkar were allegedly tasked with orchestrating the murder of Baba Siddique. They were responsible for meticulous planning, including sourcing the weapons and arranging the shooters’ accommodation. Zeeshan left Mumbai about a month before the murder.
It’s also significant that Zeeshan is believed to have made contact with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang while incarcerated in Punjab, and the gang allegedly hired him to carry out the assassination. After his release, Zeeshan travelled to Kaithal, Haryana, to meet Gurmel. He then arranged for Gurmel, Dharmaraj, and Shivkumar to come to Mumbai and handled all their living arrangements.
