Mumbai Crime Branch raids five clinics in parts of city, nab bogus doctors

The Mumbai Crime Branch along with medical officers from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMC has nabbed five men for allegedly practising medicine without the required qualifications and licences officials said on FridayAccording to the police Mumbai Crime Branchs Units 6 and 8 conducted raids at five clinics in Mumbai Four of the clinics were located in the Zakir Hussain NagarDeonar area while the fifth was in NaupadaBandra EastThe accused were examining patients providing treatment and supplying medicines despite allegedly not having valid authority to practise medicineThe action followed information received by Crime Branch officials about people allegedly practising medicine without recognised medical qualificationsTeams from Crime Branch Units 6 and 8 accompanied by BMC medical officers subsequently raided the clinics and checked the credentials of the people treating patientsPolice said the clinics appeared to operate like regular neighbourhood medical centres with boards displaying the title ldquoDrrdquo medical qualifications and in some cases registration detailsClinic boards displayed medical qualificationsAt Ayesha Clinic in Govandi the board identified Dr Mehmood Alam as BHMS Mumbai and displayed additional qualifications and a registration numberAt Gayatri Clinic also in Govandi the board identified Dr AK Dubey as a BHMS family physician and listed separate morning and evening consultation hoursHowever police allege that the men running the clinics did not possess the recognised medical qualifications or licences required to practise medicineThe Crime Branch also alleged that the accused were not registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council despite treating patients for various ailmentsBandra East clinic comes under scrutinyPolice said more serious allegations emerged during the raid on a clinic in Bandra East operated by Mohammed Aftab Shaukat Khan 56The clinic was raided at around 930 pm when four patients were reportedly waiting for treatmentDuring verification Khan allegedly told the police that he had studied only up to Class 12 and did not hold a recognised medical qualificationPolice said Khan produced medical certificates purportedly issued by the Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicine and the All India Ayurveda Vidyapeeth Investigators suspect that the documents may be forgedAccording to the police Khan was allegedly treating patients despite not having a recognised medical qualification He was also allegedly administering injections and using a nebuliserThe raid team seized medical equipment including a bloodpressure monitor stethoscope bloodsugar testing machine nebuliser pulse oximeter and syringes along with medicinesFive accused linked to five clinicsThe Crime Branch identified the five accused as Sagheer Ahmed Abdul Majid Hashmi 39 Dr Sagir Clinic Akhilesh Kumar Devendra Kumar Dubey 47 Gayatri Clinic Mehmood Alam Mohammed Sharif Sheikh 36 Ayesha Clinic Keshav Prasad Kuddur Patel 56 Patel Clinic Mohammed Aftab Shaukat Khan 56 Aftab Khan ClinicDuring the operation police seized medicines and medical material worth Rs 119324The seized material included various injection bottles syringes antibiotic tablets and other medicines and medical suppliesPolice allege that the accused were treating patients for different ailments and providing medicines despite having no valid authority to practise medicineCases registered against accusedCases have been registered against the accused at Deonar Police Station and Nirmal Nagar Police Station police saidThe operation was conducted under the guidance of Mumbai Police Commissioner Deven Bharti Joint Commissioner of Police Crime Anil Kumbhare Additional Commissioner of Police Crime Krishnakant Upadhyay DCP Detection1 Navnath Dhawale and ACPs Dharmapal Bansode and Sadanand RaneCrime Branch Unit 6 was led by PI Bharat Ghone while Unit 8 was headed by PI Ganesh Mali The teams included officers and personnel from both units
