A househelp has been arrested on the charge of stealing jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh from his employer’s home at a plush Malabar Hill society. The police said the 30-year-old accused has a criminal past and the employer had not done the mandatory police verification before hiring him. They have urged citizens to get the procedure done for their own safety. All the jewellery has been recovered.

The police said accused Madan Chaudhary was working at Rimpal Jhaveri’s home at Nepean Sea Road for three days as their regular help was on leave. “He is a habitual offender, there is a similar offence against him at Tardeo police station. Had the employers done the police verification, the crime wouldn’t have happened,” said Shashikant Pawar, an inspector from the property cell of the Crime Branch.
