An eight-year-old boy tragically lost his life after being hit by a heavy truck at Kumbharwada Junction, a busy stretch in Mumbai's Dharavi, on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

According to Shahu Nagar police, who are investigating the case, the deceased has been identified as Viraj Nitesh Kedia. The accident occurred while the truck was heading from Sion Hospital towards the Kumbharwada Junction.

The boy's mother, Dharmeshtha Kedia, along with his uncle Yogesh Kedia and other family members, rushed him to the hospital, where he was declared dead before admission.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle and ran over the child. Although he attempted to flee the scene, he was caught by local residents who had gathered after the accident.

The driver has been arrested under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation is currently underway, officials added.
