A most-wanted cheater, who had been on the run since 2016, tried to crush a police team under the wheel of his speeding SUV in Nalasopara; but a brave female police officer chased him in a Bollywood Singham style and pinned him down despite one constable’s leg getting fractured in the operation.

The 38-year-old accused builder, Ajit Dayashankar Mishra, is a history sheeter against whom five FIRs are registered at Tulinj and Achole police stations in Nalasopara East. Despite FIRs, multiple complaints have been submitted at various police stations against Mishra, said the police.

The fresh FIR was registered against Mishra at Achole police station on October 18 after complainant Kaushalendra Pandey approached cops with a complaint against him.

“Mishra was never arrested in the past, despite many FIRs for cheating and forgery being registered against him. But after I took charge of the Achole police station, one victim (Pandey) approached me with his complaint against Mishra. Subsequently, an FIR under various sections of the IPC including 420, 465, 467, 468 of Indian Penal Code was registered. And today, our brave officer, WPSI Rekha Patil, arrested him after risking her life,” said senior inspector Babasaheb Pawar of Achole police station.

Pawar told mid-day, “He is a big cheater who has been wanted since 2016 in the area. One female had also approached me a couple of days ago with a complaint against Mishra. I had promised her that he would be arrested within 72 hours. And our team worked relentlessly and kept up with my words. They gathered information about Mishra’s whereabouts, kept a watch on his movement, and nabbed him.”

Talking to mid-day, the brave sub-inspector Rekha Patil said that her team learnt about Mishra’s white Innova car in the Nalasoapra area.

“We immediately swung into action and reached the spot. We noticed that the car was parked. Soon, Mishra got inside the car, but he noticed a police team in front,” recalled WPSI Rekha Patil.

“The moment I signaled Mishra to stop his vehicle, he asked his driver to speed up, saying, ‘Chalo Chalo! Bhago! Police aayi hai…jo samne aata hai uske upar gaadi chadhaa do’. Hearing this, the driver accelerated the SUV. I made a hairline escape from the injuries as I was standing right in front of the car. But the car brushed our MSP constable, Amol Awad, 24,” she recalled.

The brave lady Singham did not give up and chased the car for a few meters. All thanks to traffic congestion that forced the SUV driver to slow down his car, which could not penetrate into the jam.

Meanwhile, WPSI Patil arrived, opened the gate, and pulled Mishra out of the car. By this time, her team had also arrived and nabbed the driver who was trying to flee from the spot.

“We have also confiscated his car and produced it before him in the court that has granted him police custody for further investigations,” she added.

“It was a dramatic chase, but we successfully managed to arrest him. His family lives in Nalasopara, but Mishra would discreetly visit his house seldomly,” she added.

Police said that Mishra would convince land owners to construct buildings on the plot on the pretext of giving them flats in the residential complexes, but would always end up forging documents to illegally grab the lands.

Sources in the police department told mid-day that Mishra had developed a few moles in the force, and they would always leak information to him whenever cops planned to arrest him. “It was the reason he was never arrested since 2016. All the cases against him are related to cheating and forgery,” said the source.

“One of the complainants had also approached the Supreme Court with his plea for action against Mishra. In the apex court, his counsel said that Mishra wants to surrender. But, despite giving him sufficient time to surrender, Mishra was on the run, as he knew no police could arrest him in MBVV jurisdiction. But a lady police officer pinned him down,” the source added.
