The Central Cyber Police Station in Mumbai has busted an alleged interstate racket that operated mule bank accounts for cyber criminals across the country. Seven accused have been arrested for allegedly facilitating the movement and withdrawal of money obtained through online frauds. During the investigation, police found that the bank accounts linked to the accused had surfaced in 84 cyber crime cases registered across India, indicating a widespread network used to launder proceeds of cyber fraud. Police have seized Rs 10 lakh in cash along with mobile phones, SIM cards, cheque books, company stamps and other incriminating documents from the accused.
According to police, acting on a tip-off received on July 29, a team from the Central Cyber Police Station laid a trap at the Indian Overseas Bank branch on Chandavarkar Road in Borivli West. Officers allegedly caught the accused immediately after they withdrew R10 lakh using a cash cheque from a mule bank account. The group was allegedly preparing to withdraw another R10 lakh when police moved in and arrested three suspects on the spot.
