The Pantnagar Police have arrested a 24-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh who allegedly came to <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-fire-breaks-out-at-thomas-cook-office-in-chembur-no-injuries-reported-23602464" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Mumbai</a> to illegally sell two country-made pistols and four live cartridges.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team laid a trap near Ghatkopar Bus Stop on the Ghatkopar&ndash;Andheri Link Road and nabbed the accused on Sunday afternoon.
According to officers, police received reliable information on Sunday that a man was travelling to Mumbai to sell illegal firearms. Around 3.30 pm, a trap was set at the specified location, where the suspect, matching the given description, was intercepted. Upon searching him, officers found two country-made pistols worth Rs 1.09 lakh and four live cartridges.
The accused has been identified as Ajay Kailash Kayata, a resident of <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/podcast/play-podcast/Ujjain-Mahakaleshwar-765" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Ujjain </a>district. Mumbai Police said he was in possession of the weapons without a valid licence and intended to sell them illegally in the city.
Based on a complaint filed by constable Bhausaheb Ghuge, an FIR has been registered at Pantnagar Police Station under Sections 3 and 25 of the Indian Arms Act, along with Sections 37(1)(A) and 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act.
The accused was produced before the magistrate court in <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-masterplan-being-prepared-to-develop-1000-acres-of-vikhroli-land-23593214" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Vikhroli</a>, which remanded him in police custody till Wednesday. Officers said further investigation is underway to trace the source of the firearms and identify potential buyers.
