A man accused of raping and murdering a 6-year-old girl in 2023 escaped on Monday when he was brought to Bhiwandi court in Thane district of Maharashtra for a hearing, a police official said, reported the PTI.
The accused, identified as Salamat Ansari, had allegedly raped and murdered the girl and then hid her body in a bucket in a closed room in 2023, and he was held in the case on September 20 that year from Bihar, the official said.
"Today, Ansari was brought from Thane jail to Bhiwandi court under police escort for a hearing. He escaped from the court premises soon after," the official said, according to the PTI.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Sachin Sangle said that all efforts are being made to nab Ansari, who was facing charges under Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Man falls off train, loses leg in mobile phone theft incident in Thane; minor detained
Meanwhile, in an another incident, a 26-year-old man fell off a moving train and lost his left leg during a mobile phone theft incident in Thane district of, following which a minor, who allegedly attacked the victim even as he lay bleeding, was detained, a railway police official said on Monday, reported the PTI.
According to the PTI, the incident took place around 7 am on Sunday between Shahad and Ambivali stations in Thane district when Gaurch Ramdas Nikam, a farmer from Nashik, was travelling on board the Tapovan Express, the Kalyan railway police station official said.
"The 16-year-old suspect, who was standing by the tracks, allegedly hit Nikam on his hand while the train was moving. It caused Nikam to lose his balance and fall off the train. His left leg was severed after it came under the wheels of the train," he said, as per the PTI.
The official said the suspect continued to hit Nikam with a stick as he lay bleeding on the tracks before escaping with the victim's phone worth Rs 20,000.
Emergency assistance arrived at the site after police was alerted by commuters and railway staff, the official said.
"Nikam was immediately shifted to a hospital. Doctors have said he is out of danger but will require long-term medical care and rehabilitation due to the loss of his left leg. The suspect was detained after a case was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions," a police official informed, the news agency reported.
